Angola awarded Golden Lion for the Best National Participation, Tino Sehgal awarded Golden Lion for the Best Artist in the International Exhibition, Camille Henrot awarded Silver Lion for a Promising Young Artist in the International Exhibition
The 55th Biennale di Venezia gave Golden Lion for the Best National Participation to Angola out of 88 participant countries. Instead of the solo show of Vadim Zakharov at the Russian Pavillion, which has attracated attention since the Biennale started, the solo show of Edson Chagas curated by Beyond Entropy (Paula Nascimento, Stefano Rabolli Pansera), Jorge Gumbe, Feliciano dos Santos, 'Luanda, Encyclopedic City' was appreciated by the Jury and received the award for expressing the irreconcilability and the complexity of Luanda.
More than 150 artists from over 38 countries participate in the International Exhibition 'Il Palazzo Enciclopedico (the Encyclopedic Palace)' curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions at the New Museum. Golden Lion for the Best Artist in the International Exhibition went to Tino Sehgal, an artist born in UK and now based in Berlin. He was also awarded Turner Prize this year. Silver Lion for a Promising Young Artist in the International Exhibition went to Camille Henrot, a French female artist.
